From the publication of his first book of poems, The Weary Blues, in 1926, Langston Hughes electrified readers and launched a renaissance in black writing in America.

The poems Hughes wrote celebrated the experience of invisible men and women: of slaves who "rushed the boots of Washington"; of musicians on Lenox Avenue; of the poor and the lovesick; of losers in "the raffle of night." They conveyed that experience in a voice that blended the spoken with the sung, that turned poetic lines into the phrases of jazz and blues, and that ripped through the curtain separating high from popular culture. They spanned the range from the lyric to the polemic, ringing out "wonder and pain and terror-and the marrow of the bone of life."

The poems in this collection were chosen by Hughes himself shortly before his death in 1967 and represent work from his entire career, including "The Negro Speaks of Rivers," "The Weary Blues," "Still Here," "Song for a Dark Girl," "Montage of a Dream Deferred," and "Refugee in America." It gives us a poet of extraordinary range, directness, and stylistic virtuosity.

Über den Autor Langston Hughes

James Langston Hughes (1902-1967) es uno de los escritores negros más destacados del siglo xx. Poeta, autor de numerosos relatos, autor de musicales y de óperas, fue un activista de los derechos de los negros en EE¿UU y un penetrante observador de las diferencias raciales en los lugares más apartados del mundo. Viajó por su país, por Centroamérica y Europa, estuvo en España durante la Guerra Civil, en la URSS y en Extremo Oriente, y de todos estos lugares nos ofrece una crónica tan brillante como minuciosa. Entre sus obras cabe destacar sus dos autobiografías, The Big Sea (1940) y I Wonder As I Wander (1956), que ahora ofrecemos en edición completa. Sus poemas: The Weary Blues (1925 y 1926), Fine Clothes to the Jew (1927), Shakespeare in Harlem (1942), Jim Crow's Last Stand (1943, un verdadero panfleto en verso), Fields of Wonder (1947), etc. Ha escrito novelas y numerosos relatos cortos, entre las primeras, Not Without Langhter (1930); entre los relatos, The Ways of White Folks (1934), Laughing to Keep from Crying (1952), The Sweet Flypaper of Life (1955), un relato sobre Harlem con fotografías de Roy DeCarava. Ha sido libretista de Kurt Weill y de Elmer Rice y es autor de musicales y óperas: Simply Heavenly (1957), Black Nativity (1961), The Prodigal Son (1961), Troubled Island (1949), The Barrier (1950), Esther (1957), etc. También ha escrito teatro de agitación, Don't You Want to Be Free?, que se estrenó en el teatro fundado por él mismo, Harlem Suitcase Theater (1938).
